February is National Children’s Dental Health Month, which promotes the importance of good oral health. Developing good oral health habits at an early age can lead to a lifetime of happy teeth and gums! Here are some tips to help establish good hygiene habits in your kids.
SHOW THEM HOW IT’S DONE
Good habits start at home and the best way to instill those habits in young children is for them to see you doing it. If kids see family members brushing their teeth, they’ll want to brush their teeth, too. Not only will your kids develop a routine of brushing, flossing, and using mouthwash, you’ll reap the benefits yourself!
START EARLY
It’s never too early to start prioritizing your child’s oral health. In fact, the earlier the better! The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry recommends that a child see a dentist by the time they are one, or within 6 months of the first tooth erupting. Kids can start learning brushing techniques around age 2 or 3 and around age 6, they should have the dexterity to brush their teeth on their own.
MAKE DENTAL CARE FUN
Most kids won’t find dental hygiene fun, but they can learn to enjoy it if they are rewarded for their efforts. Consider a brushing chart and add a sticker every time they brush their teeth or reward them with a prize after a successful trip to the dentist. Just be careful with using sweets as a reward!
ESTABLISH A RELATIONSHIP WITH A DENTIST EARLY
As previously stated, kids should start seeing a dentist by the time they are one. Early positive experiences will teach them that the dental office is a fun, friendly place and nothing to be afraid of.
Children who get in the habit of taking care of their teeth at an early age have a better chance of having healthy teeth in adulthood, so teach them the importance of oral care and take them to see a dentist early on.
