While each individual patient is unique, many dentists would tell you that most of them can be put into one of three main categories: event-driven patients, reactive patients, and proactive patients. Which type of patient you are depends on your relationship with your own oral health and how often you go to the dentist. Of course, this is not permanent and can change as soon as your habits change.

Event-Driven Patients

These are the type of patients that only come into the dentist’s office when something is wrong — think of an emergency like a chipped tooth, missing tooth, or some other type of major oral malady. These patients don’t worry about their oral health or hygiene in the long-term, and don’t show up for regular checkups. Rather, they only consider the dentist as an option if they absolutely need something fixed right away.

Reactive Patients

Reactive patients are a tad more present in their dental office, but not quite as much as they could be. They’ll come in if they’re dealing with a minor issue such as soreness or gum-bleed or even bigger issues like excruciating oral pain. But they tend to be inconsistent when it comes to showing up for regular checkups. Many of these people know the importance of consistent visits, but their participation is more limited for any number of reasons.

Proactive Patients

These patients are essentially the model citizens of the dental world. They show up for their regular checkups and make an appointment for six months later before they even leave the office. They come in whenever they’re experiencing discomfort and accept whatever treatment their dentist has prescribed.

Being proactive doesn’t come easy to everyone, but it’s the type of patient we should all strive to be. A proactive approach to oral health helps prevent small problems from becoming large ones.  Regardless of what type of patient you’ve been up until now, you should come in for regular cleanings and checkups to ensure the best possible oral health.
