As opposed to traditional dental bridges, which are held in place by crowns that are put on the teeth on both sides of the bridge, implant-supported bridges are supported with dental implants. With implant-supported bridges, implant posts are typically placed for the missing teeth and the dental crowns are connected as one piece across the posts. Our dentists will create a bridge with artificial teeth that are held up between two implant-supported crowns if posts cannot be placed for each tooth.
If you have lost more than one tooth, or if there is a possibility that the individual implants may be placed under too much pressure in your mouth and loosen from your jawbone, an implant-supported bridge may be the best choice for you. Implant-supported bridges lessen the pressure you put on the individual implants by distributing the pressure along the bridge, allowing the implants to stay secure. Implant-supported bridges offer the following benefits:
- Provide a long-lasting solution for your missing teeth
- Allow your other teeth to keep their positions in your smile
- Act, look and feel like natural teeth
- Preserve your supporting bone structure
- Is a less expensive option
There are usually two surgeries involved with implant-supported bridges: One surgery places the implant posts in your jawbone, and the other places and secures the bridge on the posts. A healing period will be needed between the surgeries.
